Drive-through locations are concentrated in suburban and exurban corridors with high vehicle traffic. Urban cores like Manhattan and downtown San Francisco have almost no drive-through Starbucks locations due to zoning and real estate constraints. Notably, China — the second-largest market with 5,011 stores — has zero drive-throughs.

The average distance between a Starbucks and its nearest neighbor in the US is 1.8 miles. However, this average masks enormous variation between urban and rural areas:
The closest pair of Starbucks in our dataset are less than 200 feet apart — a common configuration in busy airports and shopping malls where one location cannot handle peak demand. The most isolated Starbucks in the US is more than 80 miles from its nearest neighbor.

During the same period, approximately 340 stores closed globally — primarily underperforming urban inline locations in the US and licensed locations in airports that had not recovered post-pandemic traffic levels.

Oregon leads the US with 8.1 Starbucks locations per 100,000 residents, well above the national average of 4.5 per 100,000. The Pacific Northwest's deeply embedded coffee culture — Starbucks was founded in Seattle — drives high per-capita density in both Oregon and Washington.

States with the lowest Starbucks per capita include Mississippi (1.6 per 100K), West Virginia (1.7), and Alabama (2.0) — reflecting a combination of lower population density, lower median household income, and stronger local coffee and QSR competition.
The national average is approximately 4.5 Starbucks per 100,000 residents, or roughly 1 Starbucks for every 22,000 people.
